AIF-C01 Practice Question 51: Scanned Form Data Extraction

AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01) · Test 6 · question 1 of 10

Fundamentals of AI and MLeasy

A mortgage lender receives thousands of scanned PDF loan applications every week. Staff currently retype the applicant's name, declared income and the repayment schedule table into the core banking system. The lender wants a managed AWS service that returns each form field paired with its value and preserves the structure of the tables, with no model training. Which service should it use?

Answer:

  • C. Amazon Textract

Amazon Textract goes beyond plain optical character recognition: its Document Analysis API extracts text, forms and tables from documents with structured data, so a scanned application comes back as key-value pairs ("Annual income" → "$84,000") and as table cells that keep their rows and columns. It handles typed and handwritten text in image and PDF files and needs no ML expertise (option C).

- A is wrong because Amazon Comprehend analyses text that has *already been extracted*; it finds entities, sentiment and key phrases. Given a scanned image it has nothing to read. It is a sensible step *after* Textract, not instead of it. - B is wrong because Amazon Rekognition analyses images and video for objects, scenes and faces. Its text detection is aimed at short text within a scene, such as a street sign or a product label; it does not return form key-value pairs or reconstruct table structure from documents. - D is wrong because Amazon Translate converts text from one language to another. The lender's problem is getting the data off the page, not changing its language.
