Website privacy policy

This policy covers the Get Your Cert website at getyourcert.org. The site is also reachable at its Firebase addresses, get-your-cert.web.app and get-your-cert.firebaseapp.com, and this policy covers those too. The Android app is a separate product with its own privacy policy.

Summary

You can use the whole website without an account, and your progress stays in your browser. Google Analytics counts visits so we can see which pages are useful; you can turn it off at any time, and it is never used for advertising. The site may show ads from Google AdSense, which keeps the site free; you can turn off personalised ads. Signing in with Google is optional. It syncs your practice progress across devices, and it is needed to play Play and appear on its leaderboard under a username you choose.

Without signing in

Your practice-test and game results — which tests you have taken, your scores, and when — are saved only in your browser, using its local storage. They are not sent to us or to anyone else, and they are removed when you clear this site's data in your browser.

A full practice exam also keeps your answers, the questions you flagged and its start time in your browser's local storage while you are taking it, so the clock and your answers survive a page reload. That record is deleted when you submit, and only the score and date are kept. Exam results stay in your browser even if you sign in; they are not synced.

If you sign in with Google

Signing in uses Firebase Authentication, a Google service. It stores:

  • your Google account's name, email address and profile photo address,
  • a user ID that Firebase creates for you,
  • when your account was created and when you last signed in.

Your progress is then also copied to Cloud Firestore, a Google database, stored in Google Cloud's Mumbai region (asia-south1). For each test or game level, it stores your score, the number of questions, and the date you finished it. Nothing else is stored: not your individual answers, how long you took, or which pages you visited.

Security rules on the database allow only you, signed in, to read or change your own progress.

Google processes this data for us as a service provider. See the Firebase privacy and security information and the Google Privacy Policy.

The website contacts Google's sign-in and database services only after you click Sign in, and on later visits while you stay signed in. It never shows your profile photo, so it makes no request to load it.

Your account is never linked to the usage statistics described below. We do not send your user ID, name, email address or scores to Google Analytics.

Usage statistics (Google Analytics)

The website uses Google Analytics to count visits. It receives:

  • which pages you view, their titles, and the page you came from. Compete match addresses are shortened to /compete/match, so no match ID is sent,
  • a random ID stored in the _ga and _ga_SQDXG34H9G cookies, which lets it tell a returning browser from a new one. These cookies last up to two years,
  • your device type, browser, screen size, language, and an approximate location worked out from your IP address. Google Analytics does not store the IP address itself,
  • which links to other websites you click.

We use this only as totals: how many people visit, which certifications and tests are read, and where visitors come from. Google signals and ad personalisation are switched off, the data is not shared with Google for its own purposes, and detailed event data is deleted after two months.

Google processes this data for us as a service provider. See how Google uses information from sites that use its services.

Turning it off: choose Turn off analytics at the bottom of any page. The website then stops loading Google Analytics, deletes its cookies from your browser, and sends nothing more. Your choice is saved in your browser's local storage until you clear this site's data. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, analytics is off from the start. Browser extensions that block trackers also stop it.

Advertising (Google AdSense)

The website may show ads served by Google AdSense. Ads are how the site stays free. They are placed around the content, never inside a question or between its answer options.

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites.
  • Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
  • Ads may also be served by other ad networks that Google works with, which may use their own cookies in the same way.

The website never sends the ad services your user ID, name, email address or scores. Signing in to this site does not change which ads you see.

Turning off personalised ads: visit Google's Ads Settings, or opt out of other vendors' personalised ads at www.aboutads.info (or www.youronlinechoices.eu in Europe). You will still see ads, but they will not be based on your browsing. If you are in the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland, you are asked for your consent before personalised ads are shown, and you can change your choice at any time. In US states with their own privacy laws, a Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information link lets you opt out of your data being used for personalised ads; you then see only non-personalised ads. The Turn off analytics switch covers Google Analytics only, not ads.

See how Google uses cookies in advertising.

If you play a match in Compete

Compete does not need an account. You can play as a guest: you type a name, and Firebase gives your browser an anonymous ID so the match knows which answers are yours. We never learn who you are, and a guest's practice progress is not synced anywhere. When you play, the match is stored in the same Firestore database and holds:

  • the name you play under — the one you typed as a guest, or your first name only if you are signed in. Never your email address or photo,
  • the user ID of each player, the category, and which ten questions were drawn,
  • which option each player picked for each question, and when.

Both players can read the match they are in, so your opponent can see your first name and which option you chose, as soon as you answer. Nobody else can read it. A match you start that nobody joins is deleted when you leave the page.

If you play Play

Play needs a Google sign-in and a username that you choose. The username is public: it is shown on the Play leaderboards, which anyone can read without an account. Your Google name, email address and photo are never shown. In the same Firestore database, Play stores:

  • your username, linked to your user ID, and when you chose it,
  • each run you play: the topic, your score, lives and skips, when it started and ended, and for each question, which option you picked (or that you skipped or ran out of time) and when,
  • your best score in each topic, on that topic's leaderboard, with your username and when you posted it.

Only you can read your runs. Your runs, leaderboard entries and username are kept until you delete your synced data. If you are signed out, the website loads a leaderboard only when you choose Show top 10, which is when it first contacts Google's database.

We may remove a username that is offensive or impersonates someone, together with its leaderboard entries.

Deleting your data

  • Signed-in data: open the account menu (your initial, top right) and choose Delete synced data. This deletes your synced progress, your Play username, runs and leaderboard entries, and your account straight away. Matches you have played are kept, because they belong to your opponent as well, but nothing in them identifies you once your account is gone. Email us if you want a match removed.
  • Signing out keeps your synced data, so you can sign in again later.
  • Browser data: progress saved in your browser stays there until you clear this site's data.

What we do not do

  • No analytics you cannot turn off, and no ads inside the questions.
  • No selling of your account data or progress.
  • No emails sent to you. Your address is used only to identify your account.

Hosting

The website is served by Firebase Hosting. Like any web server, it receives your IP address and browser details to deliver the pages. We do not use them to identify or track you.

Children

The website is a study tool for professional certifications and is not directed at children.
