These exams are no longer offered by their vendors. The questions are kept for reference and are not updated.

Why certification exams are retired

Cloud vendors revise their exams every few years, because the services they test keep changing. AWS, Microsoft and Google publish an exam guide for each version, and when enough of it is out of date they release a new version with a new code, such as SOA-C02 becoming SOA-C03. The old version stays open for a short overlap and then closes. Sometimes the certification is renamed or merged into another one at the same time.

Retiring an exam does not cancel the certifications people already earned with it. A certification stays valid until its normal expiry date, and the vendor's renewal rules then point you at the current version.

What this archive is for

Each exam listed here has a practice bank that was written while the exam was live. The questions are kept so the work in them is not lost, but they are frozen: no new questions are added and existing ones are not updated for later service changes. Each card above shows the last day the exam was offered and the exam that replaced it.

The archive is still useful in three situations:

  • You are studying for the successor. New versions usually keep most of the old exam's domains and add new material on top. An archived bank is a good way to practise the shared core before you move on to what changed.
  • You are learning the services, not the exam. A question about CloudWatch alarms or SageMaker endpoints teaches the same thing whether or not the exam code is current.
  • You hold the old certification. If you are preparing to renew, the archive shows what the previous version expected, so you can see how much the new one adds.

Before you rely on an archived question

Read each explanation with its date in mind. A feature can be renamed, gain new options or stop taking new customers after the question was written, and the archive is not changed to follow it. When a question and the current AWS, Azure or Google Cloud documentation disagree, trust the documentation.

When you are ready for the current exam, open its page from the home page. Active exams keep getting new tests, many have a full-length mock exam, and some have a study guide that explains what changed between versions.
