About the SAP-C02 exam
AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional is the senior architecture exam. Where the Associate exam asks whether you can design one workload well, this one asks whether you can do it across dozens of accounts, several Regions and an on-premises data center at once, while also migrating the old estate and improving what is already running. AWS aims it at people with two or more years of experience designing and building solutions on AWS.
The questions are long. A typical one describes a company with an existing setup, a few hard requirements and a constraint such as minimal downtime, least operational effort or lowest cost, then offers four designs that are all plausible. Often every option would technically work, and the skill is spotting the one detail (a missing cross-account permission, a single point of failure, a manual step) that rules three of them out. Reading speed and stamina matter as much as knowledge.
SAP-C02 is being replaced. AWS has announced that the last day to take SAP-C02 is November 16, 2026, and that registration for the updated SAP-C03 exam opens on October 27, 2026. The questions here follow the SAP-C02 exam guide; if you sit the exam after that date, check the SAP-C03 guide for changes.
Exam format
- Questions: 75, multiple choice (one answer from four) or multiple response (two or more answers from five or more). 65 count toward your score; the other 10 are unscored trial questions that aren't marked.
- Time: 180 minutes.
- Passing score: 750 on a scaled score from 100 to 1,000. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so never leave a question blank.
- Cost: 300 USD, at a Pearson VUE test center or online with a remote proctor.
- Validity: 3 years.
What the exam covers
The official exam guide splits the exam into four domains:
- Design Solutions for Organizational Complexity (26%). Multi-account strategy with AWS Organizations, SCPs and Control Tower; IAM Identity Center and cross-account roles; hybrid and multi-VPC networking with Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, VPN and Route 53 Resolver; centralised logging, auditing and cost allocation.
- Design for New Solutions (29%). Picking compute, storage and databases for demanding requirements; event-driven and serverless designs with Lambda, Step Functions, EventBridge and SQS; containers on ECS and EKS; deployment strategies and multi-Region resilience with defined RTO and RPO targets.
- Continuous Improvement for Existing Solutions (25%). Fixing the weak spots in a running system: adding automation and remediation with AWS Config and Systems Manager, tightening security, improving performance and reliability, and cutting cost without breaking anything.
- Accelerate Workload Migration and Modernization (20%). Choosing a migration strategy for each workload, moving servers with Application Migration Service and databases with DMS and its schema conversion, transferring large data sets, and breaking monoliths apart, for example with a strangler-fig approach.
How the practice questions here are organised
There are 10 practice tests of 10 questions each. Every test mixes all four domains, and most include at least one hybrid networking question, because those connect almost every other topic on this exam. The scenarios are written at professional length on purpose: several paragraphs, several constraints, and options that differ in one or two details. Each explanation says why the right design wins and what is wrong with each of the others, with a link to the AWS documentation.
The full practice exam copies the real one: 75 questions in 180 minutes, weighted by domain the same way, with answers hidden until you submit. It scores all 75 questions and passes you at 75%, because AWS doesn't publish how its scaled score maps to correct answers.
A study plan that works
- Check your date first. If you can't sit SAP-C02 by November 16, 2026, plan for SAP-C03 instead and use these questions as background, not as your main preparation.
- Take Test 1 timed, at about two and a half minutes per question, to feel the pace before you study anything.
- For every question you miss, write down the single detail that ruled out your answer. After a few tests you'll see the same few traps repeat.
- Spend extra time on multi-account networking and identity. Transit Gateway routing, Direct Connect resiliency and cross-account access appear across all four domains, not just the first.
- When the tests pass comfortably, sit the full practice exam in one three-hour block.
- Read questions from the last sentence backwards: find the actual requirement first, then read the scenario looking only for the facts that bear on it.
