AZ-104 Practice Question 34: Azure Files Previous Versions

Microsoft Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104) · Test 4 · question 4 of 10

An SMB Azure file share is mapped as drive S: on every finance workstation, and a scheduled job takes a share snapshot every hour. This morning an analyst saved over forecast.xlsx and needs yesterday's version of that one file. Everything else on the share has changed legitimately since then and must not be touched.

What is the quickest way to recover the file?

Answer:

  • D. Have the analyst open the file's Previous Versions tab in File Explorer on S: and restore it

Share snapshots are taken at share level but recovered at file level: "Share snapshot capability is provided at the file share level. Retrieval is provided at the individual file level, to allow for restoring individual files." On a mounted SMB share this is self-service: "just like with on-premises Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) snapshots, you can view the snapshots from your mounted Azure file share by using the Previous versions tab in Windows", so the analyst restores one file and nothing else on the share is affected.

Option A works but is the wrong blast radius. Restoring the whole share overwrites the base share with the snapshot's contents, undoing every other legitimate change made since the snapshot, and all those restored files then count as changed content.

Option B is not a supported operation: "The share snapshot isn't promoted to base share." You copy data out of a snapshot; you never swap one in.

Option C targets the wrong service. Blob soft delete protects blobs in Blob Storage; an Azure file share is a different service with its own protections: share snapshots for file-level recovery, and file share soft delete for a share that was deleted outright.
