AZ-104 Practice Question 59: Application Gateway Path Routing
Microsoft Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104) · Test 6 · question 9 of 10
A company hosts a web site at one hostname behind one public IP address. Requests for /images/* must go to a pool of VMs optimized for static content, and requests for /api/* must go to a different pool of application servers, both in the same region.
Which service should the administrator deploy in front of the pools?
Show answer and explanation
Answer:
Application Gateway is a layer 7 load balancer that understands HTTP. A path-based routing rule uses a URL path map to send requests that match /images/* to one backend pool and /api/* to another, all through a single frontend IP and hostname.
Option A is a layer 4 load balancer. It distributes connections by IP address and port and cannot read the URL, so it cannot separate requests by path.
Option B works at the DNS level. Traffic Manager returns a different endpoint address when a name is resolved, so it can direct clients by region or performance but never sees the path of a request, and the client then connects directly to the endpoint.
Option D filters traffic by source, destination, port and protocol. It does not route, and network security group rules cannot match URL paths.
