Google Cloud certification path: is ACE worth it?

Updated 21 October 2026 · 8 min read

Google's Associate Cloud Engineer (ACE) certification is worth it if you will deploy, run or secure workloads on Google Cloud. It's Google's associate exam for general cloud engineering, it costs 125 USD, it's valid for three years, and it covers what the professional exams assume you already know. If you don't work hands-on with Google Cloud, a cheaper entry exam or a different cloud will serve you better.

This guide explains the whole Google Cloud certification path as of October 2026: the entry-level exams, ACE in detail, the professional exams that come after it, which path fits which role, and what everything costs. Every exam fact was checked on Google Cloud's certification pages and exam guides on October 21, 2026.

How Google Cloud certifications are organised

Google groups its certifications into three tiers:

  • Foundational (entry level): Cloud Digital Leader and Generative AI Leader. Non-technical, 99 USD each.
  • Associate: Associate Cloud Engineer, Associate Data Practitioner and Associate Google Workspace Administrator. 125 USD each.
  • Professional: 200 USD each. Cloud Architect, Cloud Developer, Cloud DevOps Engineer, Cloud Network Engineer, Cloud Security Engineer, Cloud Database Engineer, Data Engineer, Machine Learning Engineer, Security Operations Engineer, and Agentic Architect (in beta).

A few rules apply to all of them. Google uses exam names, not codes. No exam has a formal prerequisite; the experience levels Google gives are recommendations. Google doesn't publish a passing score for any exam. Prices are in US dollars, plus tax where it applies, and Google's pages show no rupee price.

Entry level: Cloud Digital Leader and Generative AI Leader

Cloud Digital Leader is for anyone who needs to understand what the cloud does for a business: managers, sales and finance staff, and new graduates. As of October 2026 it's 90 minutes, 50 to 60 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions, 99 USD and valid for three years. A new version of the exam went live on August 12, 2026. Its six domains give 18% each to digital transformation, data, AI, modernising infrastructure and applications, and security, and 10% to operations.

Generative AI Leader is the AI equivalent: also 99 USD, 90 minutes and 50 to 60 questions, valid for three years, with no prerequisites. It asks which AI approach fits a business problem, such as this practice question on grounding answers in internal policies. The Generative AI Leader practice tests cover it in full, and the guide to Google Cloud's generative AI offerings maps the products it names.

Neither is required before ACE. If you already work in IT, you can start with ACE.

Associate Cloud Engineer: the exam in detail

As of October 2026, the ACE exam looks like this:

  • Who it's for: people who deploy and secure applications, monitor operations across projects, and maintain solutions on Google Cloud.
  • Recommended experience: six months or more of hands-on Google Cloud work. No formal prerequisite.
  • Format: two hours, 50 to 60 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions.
  • Price: 125 USD plus tax.
  • Delivery: online with a remote proctor, or at a test centre.
  • Languages: English, Japanese, Spanish and Portuguese.
  • Validity: three years. Google's ACE page says so, though many third-party sites still say two.
  • Domains: setting up a cloud environment (20%), planning and implementing a solution (30%), ensuring successful operation (30%), and configuring access and security (20%).

The exam is practical. You're expected to know how to do things, and the questions read like tickets. For example, granting a group read access across every project in a folder, including ones created later, is a resource hierarchy question, as this practice question on role inheritance shows. Billing comes up too: this practice question on budget alerts asks how to email finance at set thresholds and hook in automation later. And it tests choosing between compute options, as in this practice question on GKE Autopilot.

The exam guide is current with Google's renamed products. It refers to the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform ("formerly Vertex AI") and covers Cloud Run, GKE Autopilot, Gemini Cloud Assist and the Gemini CLI. Study material that still says only "Vertex AI" predates the change.

Is the Associate Cloud Engineer certification worth it?

Google publishes no salary or hiring data for its certifications, so "worth it" comes down to what the exam covers and what it costs. On those terms, ACE is worth it for:

  • Cloud and platform engineers on Google Cloud. The four domains are the daily job: projects, IAM, networking, compute, storage, monitoring.
  • People heading for a professional exam. The professional exams assume ACE-level knowledge of gcloud, IAM and the core services. ACE is the cheaper place to learn it and to find out whether you have it.
  • Engineers moving from AWS or Azure. Google's resource hierarchy, IAM model and networking differ from the other clouds in ways that trip people up. Studying for ACE forces you to learn them. The guide to Google Cloud IAM roles and service accounts covers the biggest difference.

ACE is less worth it if:

  • You don't touch Google Cloud. Six months of hands-on work is the recommendation, and the questions assume it. A certification on the cloud you actually use will help more.
  • Your role is non-technical. Cloud Digital Leader or Generative AI Leader costs less and fits the job.
  • You already have years on Google Cloud. A professional exam such as Cloud Architect may be the better use of your time and money, since nothing requires ACE first.

The three-year validity also helps the case: you renew ACE less often than most professional certifications, which last two years (the Agentic Architect, one).

Professional exams after ACE

Professional exams cost 200 USD as of October 2026, and most recommend three or more years of industry experience, including at least one on Google Cloud (Cloud Database Engineer asks for five). The most common next steps:

Professional Cloud Architect

Two hours, 50 to 60 questions, in English and Japanese. Two case studies make up 20-30% of the exam. The largest domain is designing and planning a cloud solution architecture (25%). This practice question on defining SLIs, SLOs and error budgets shows the design-level thinking it expects. The Cloud Architect practice test has a full set in the exam's style.

Professional Data Engineer

Two hours, 40 to 50 questions, in English and Japanese. Its domains are design (22%), ingesting and processing data (25%), storage (20%), preparing data for analysis (15%), and maintaining and automating workloads (18%). BigQuery cost and performance is a favourite topic, as in this practice question on partitioning and clustering. The Data Engineer practice test covers the rest.

Professional Cloud Developer and Machine Learning Engineer

Cloud Developer is two hours and 50 to 60 questions, with designing applications as the largest domain (32%). Machine Learning Engineer has the same length and focuses on building, serving and monitoring models on Google's AI platform. Practice tests for the Machine Learning Engineer exam are on this site too.

Professional Agentic Architect (beta)

A new exam for architects building agent-based systems on Google Cloud, it is in beta as of October 2026. Google's page says beta registration has closed, with general availability expected in mid-November 2026. Treat it as announced, not available, until then. The Professional Agentic Architect guide explains its two-part format.

Which Google Cloud path fits you

  1. Cloud or platform engineer: ACE, then Professional Cloud Architect or Cloud DevOps Engineer.
  2. Developer: ACE, then Professional Cloud Developer.
  3. Data engineer: ACE (or Associate Data Practitioner if your work is mostly data), then Professional Data Engineer.
  4. ML engineer: ACE, then Professional Machine Learning Engineer.
  5. Manager, sales or business role: Cloud Digital Leader, or Generative AI Leader if AI is the focus.
  6. Experienced Google Cloud architect: go straight to Professional Cloud Architect. No prerequisite stops you.

If you're choosing between clouds rather than exams, the best AI certifications guide compares Google with AWS and Microsoft.

Google Cloud certification cost and preparation

As of October 2026, the prices are 99 USD for entry-level exams, 125 USD for associate and 200 USD for professional, plus tax. Google's pages don't list rupee prices.

Renewal costs less. ACE has a renewal exam of one hour and 20 questions for 75 USD. Cloud Architect's renewal exam is one hour, 25 questions and 100 USD. Google's renewal FAQ says you receive a 50% discount code for renewal when you first certify, and in the final year you can also extend some certifications by completing Google Skills courses and badges.

On free options, there's no general free-voucher programme on Google's pages. The GEAR "Get Certified" programme is a no-cost training programme with tracks for Generative AI Leader, ACE and Cloud Architect. However, it's only for employees of Google Cloud customers who sign up with a corporate email, vouchers are earned by finishing all the labs and skill badges, and as of October 21, 2026 Google's page shows registration closed for all three editions so far. For everyone else, Google offers:

  • learning paths on Google Skills (formerly Cloud Skills Boost) for each exam;
  • the exam guide and a set of sample questions for each exam;
  • for ACE, a "Preparing for the Associate Cloud Engineer Examination" course;
  • the free tier, plus 300 USD in credit for new customers, for hands-on practice.

For timed practice, the Associate Cloud Engineer practice tests on this site have 100 questions across all four domains. The ACE question list lets you pick out IAM, networking or GKE when you need to drill one area.
