Microsoft Fabric certification: DP-700 vs DP-600
There are two Microsoft Fabric certifications: DP-600 (Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate) if you prepare data and build semantic models for analysis, and DP-700 (Fabric Data Engineer Associate) if you build pipelines, transform data with Spark or run streaming workloads. As of October 2026 both exams last 100 minutes, pass at 700, cost US$165 or ₹4,865 in India before tax, and renew yearly for free.
This guide gives each exam the same facts in the same order, then lists how they differ, where they overlap, and which to take first for your starting role, with a free preparation plan. The facts were checked on 27 October 2026, after the minor updates to both exams dated 19 October 2026.
What Microsoft Fabric is, in one paragraph
Microsoft Fabric is a software-as-a-service analytics platform that brings ingestion, transformation, streaming, analysis and reporting together. Its workloads include Data Factory, Data Engineering with Apache Spark and notebooks, Data Warehouse, Real-Time Intelligence and Power BI. They share OneLake, a logical data lake for the tenant, with shortcuts that can access external data without copying it. A lakehouse organizes files and tables over that lake, while semantic models support analysis of the prepared data. The certifications test different responsibilities across this shared platform.
The two Microsoft Fabric certifications (and what isn't one)
DP-600 and DP-700 are both live, generally available Fabric certifications. Neither has a retirement announced as of October 2026, and DP-700 does not replace DP-600. The exam codes identify different roles, so a higher number does not make DP-700 the next level after DP-600.
DP-203, the former Azure Data Engineer Associate exam, retired on 31 March 2025, as Microsoft's retired DP-203 study guide records. Microsoft replaced its DP-203 course with the DP-700 course, so DP-700 is the natural next step for a former Azure data engineer. Treat DP-203 as history when an older article recommends it for Fabric.
PL-300 earns Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate and covers preparing, modeling, analyzing and securing Power BI data, including Power Query and DAX. DP-900 earns Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Fundamentals. Both are related credentials, but neither is a Fabric certification or a required preliminary exam for the Fabric path.
DP-600: Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate
Passing DP-600, Implementing Analytics Solutions Using Microsoft Fabric, earns Microsoft Certified: Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate. It suits analytics engineers and analysts who prepare data and manage semantic models, warehouses and lakehouses.
- Prerequisites: no formal prerequisite exam. You should already be comfortable with data modeling and Power BI semantic models, and be able to query data using SQL, KQL and DAX.
- Format (as of October 2026): 100 minutes. Microsoft gives a general range of 40–60 questions for most certification exams, but does not publish a fixed DP-600 count or question-type mix.
- Passing score: 700 on Microsoft's scaled scoring system. This is not a statement that you need 70% of the questions correct.
- Price (as of October 2026): US$165 in the US or ₹4,865 in India, before tax, based on the country where the exam is proctored.
- Delivery: Pearson VUE; in most cases you can choose online proctoring or a test center.
- Renewal: the certification expires after 12 months. You can renew free through an online, open-book, unproctored assessment during the six-month renewal window.
The DP-600 study guide sets out the skills measured as of 19 October 2026. Its domains and weights are:
- Maintain a data analytics solution: 25–30%. Secure access, apply governance controls and manage the solution's lifecycle through version control and deployment pipelines.
- Prepare data: 45–50%. Choose and connect data stores, transform data, build a star schema, and query with SQL, KQL and DAX.
- Implement and manage semantic models: 25–30%. Choose storage modes, build relationships and calculations, and improve model performance, including Direct Lake and incremental refresh.
Data preparation is the largest domain, so DAX experience alone leaves a substantial gap. In a practice workspace, work through choosing a lakehouse or warehouse, cleaning duplicates and missing values, joining data, and preparing a star schema before you build the semantic model. Then practice relationships, DAX calculations, storage modes and refresh behavior.
The model work includes calculation groups, composite models and Direct Lake performance. Treat these as decisions you need to explain: why a storage mode fits, what a model relationship does, or where a slow query needs attention. The 19 October 2026 change log records a minor update to querying and analyzing data.
DP-700: Fabric Data Engineer Associate
Passing DP-700, Implementing Data Engineering Solutions Using Microsoft Fabric, earns Microsoft Certified: Fabric Data Engineer Associate. It suits data engineers responsible for ingestion, transformation, orchestration and the operation of analytics solutions.
- Prerequisites: no prerequisite exam or course is listed. Microsoft expects data engineering expertise and skills in SQL, PySpark and KQL.
- Format (as of October 2026): 100 minutes. Microsoft's general range is 40–60 questions for most certification exams; a fixed DP-700 count and question-type mix are not published.
- Passing score: 700 on Microsoft's scaled scoring system. Do not convert that into a raw percentage of correct answers.
The DP-700 study guide sets out the skills measured as of 19 October 2026. Its domains and weights are:
- Implement and manage an analytics solution: 30–35%. Configure workspaces, manage security and deployment, and orchestrate work with pipelines, notebooks or Dataflow Gen2.
- Ingest and transform data: 30–35%. Handle full and incremental loads, batch transformations, streaming, shortcuts and mirroring, using SQL, PySpark and KQL where appropriate.
- Monitor and optimize an analytics solution: 30–35%. Monitor jobs and refreshes, diagnose errors, and improve lakehouse tables, warehouses, pipelines and streaming workloads.
The equal weight ranges make operations as important as loading data. Build a pipeline, check what happens when it fails, and explain how you would locate the error and correct it. Practice choosing between a notebook, pipeline and Dataflow Gen2 instead of always reaching for the tool you already know.
Streaming is explicit: the outline includes Eventstream, Spark structured streaming, KQL and windowing functions. It also covers late-arriving data and monitoring across the solution, so a successful batch load is only part of the preparation. The 19 October 2026 update made minor changes to workspace settings and performance optimization.
DP-600 vs DP-700: how the exams differ
Compare the responsibilities behind the exam names. These are the distinctions that should change what you study and which exam you book.
- DP-600: the role centers on preparing and modeling data for analytics. / DP-700: the role centers on building and operating the processes that ingest and transform it.
- DP-600: expects SQL, KQL and DAX skills. / DP-700: expects SQL, KQL and PySpark skills.
- DP-600: Prepare data is the largest domain, at 45–50%. / DP-700: no single domain is largest; all three carry 30–35%.
- DP-600: includes querying and preparing data from Fabric's analytics stores. / DP-700: explicitly covers streaming ingestion and transformation, including Eventstream and Spark structured streaming.
- DP-600: a dedicated semantic-model domain covers modeling, DAX and performance. / DP-700: monitors semantic model refresh, but has no dedicated semantic-model domain.
- DP-600: performance work emphasizes analytics and semantic models. / DP-700: has a domain for monitoring, resolving errors and optimizing the wider solution.
- DP-600: exam languages are English, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), German, French, Spanish and Portuguese (Brazil), as of October 2026. / DP-700: offers the same languages, plus Chinese (Traditional), Italian and Korean, as of October 2026.
Where they overlap
Both exams cover access control, governance, version control and deployment pipelines. Both also expect you to prepare useful analytical data: star schemas, aggregation, denormalization, and handling duplicates or missing values. SQL and KQL appear in both outlines.
You can reuse a practice workspace and much of your security and data-preparation work when studying for the other exam, so the second one costs less effort than the first. A DP-600 candidate still needs streaming and operational troubleshooting for DP-700; a DP-700 candidate still needs DAX and semantic-model depth for DP-600.
Governance also connects to broader Azure study. For example, a practice question on Microsoft Purview governance explores sensitive-data discovery and classification. This is an AZ-900 question on a shared governance concept, not a Fabric exam item or a test of Fabric-specific permissions.
Which Microsoft Fabric certification to take first
Start with the role you already perform or are actively moving into. Use the following choices as a study order, with the second Fabric exam reserved for work that actually crosses both roles.
- Power BI analyst or PL-300 holder: start with DP-600 if you want to extend your work into Fabric analytics. Keep your modeling and DAX skills, then add Fabric data stores, preparation, governance and deployment. If your immediate goal is Power BI reporting, PL-300 remains the more directly relevant Power BI certification.
- SQL or BI developer: choose DP-600 when your destination is analytical models and reporting. Choose DP-700 when your main responsibility is loading, transforming and operating data pipelines. SQL experience helps either way; check whether DAX or PySpark is your larger gap.
- Spark or former Synapse engineer: start with DP-700. Map your existing engineering skills to Fabric's orchestration, security and monitoring, then add DP-600 if you also own semantic models. An old DP-203 study plan needs updating for Fabric.
- Newcomer: study the DP-900 fundamentals material first if the data concepts are unfamiliar. DP-900 is optional: Microsoft lists no prerequisite exam for either Fabric certification. Build something in Fabric before deciding which associate exam matches the tasks you want to keep doing.
- Manager: begin with Fabric's overview and learning material. Choose an associate exam when you want to demonstrate the technical skills in its outline, rather than booking both to learn the vocabulary.
If your work is broader Azure infrastructure, the Azure certification path helps separate that direction from Fabric analytics. If the platform itself is still undecided, the Databricks Data Engineer Associate vs AWS comparison covers other data engineering routes.
Cost and how to prepare
As of October 2026, Microsoft's exam price feed lists US$165 for the US and ₹4,865 for India for each of these DP exams, before tax. The price depends on the country where you take the proctored exam; the India amount is the local price in Microsoft's feed. After a failed first attempt, the first retake is allowed after 24 hours, while later retakes have longer waits.
Free official preparation
Both certification pages link free practice assessments, self-paced Microsoft Learn material and the exam sandbox. Use the assessments to identify weak topics and the exam sandbox to learn the interface. Microsoft's exam-duration guidance explains the general experience; the sandbox's sample interactions do not promise a particular question mix for either Fabric exam.
- Read the current study guide and mark each skill you can demonstrate, explain, or still need to learn. Give extra attention to the largest DP-600 domain and balanced attention to all DP-700 domains.
- Follow the relevant Learn paths and use a Fabric workspace for hands-on practice. For DP-600, prepare data and build a semantic model; for DP-700, build ingestion and transformation work, then monitor and troubleshoot it.
- Add security and deployment to the same project. Practice the shared objectives alongside the work that distinguishes your chosen exam.
- Take the official practice assessment and investigate each weak area in the documentation and workspace. Revisit the sandbox before booking so that interface unfamiliarity does not consume your exam time.
Where the practice questions here fit
There is no Fabric question bank on getyourcert.org. The AWS Data Engineer Associate practice tests cover some of the same data engineering patterns on AWS, and the DEA-C01 question list lets you pick those concepts individually. For broader Azure basics, the AZ-900 practice tests are a separate starting point; neither bank substitutes for Microsoft's Fabric preparation.
Incremental loading means deciding what has already been processed before loading again. An AWS example is a practice question on incremental loads with Glue job bookmarks. Use it to reason about repeated ingestion, then practice Fabric's own incremental-load options.
File layout and data quality are also useful concepts to revisit. In the AWS bank, a practice question on small-file compaction for Athena examines file compaction, while a practice question on data quality rules in Glue examines checks before bad data reaches downstream analytics. Both are AWS questions on shared engineering concepts, not Fabric exam items.
For table maintenance, a practice question on row-level deletes in Iceberg explores an AWS lakehouse deletion scenario. It helps you think about what a table format must support; Fabric Data Warehouse stores its data in the open Delta Lake format, so the details there differ.
Frequently asked questions
Which is easier, DP-600 or DP-700?
Your starting skills matter more than the exam code. DP-600 is likely to feel more familiar if you work with Power BI models and DAX; DP-700 is likely to feel more familiar if you build pipelines with SQL and PySpark. Use the official practice assessments to find your gaps before choosing based on perceived difficulty.
Is DP-700 worth it?
DP-700 is a sensible choice when your current or intended work involves engineering data on Fabric. Its outline gives you a structure for learning ingestion, orchestration, security and operations, but the credential alone does not demonstrate a completed project. If your target work uses another platform, compare that platform's certification before paying for this one.
Do I need PL-300 before DP-600?
No prerequisite exam is required for DP-600. PL-300 covers useful Power BI and DAX skills, so its learning material can help when those are gaps. If you already have that experience, you can prepare directly for DP-600.
How much does the Fabric certification cost in India?
As of October 2026, either DP-600 or DP-700 costs ₹4,865 before tax in India, according to Microsoft's exam price feed. The corresponding US price is US$165 before tax. Pricing depends on where the exam is proctored, so check the amount when booking.
Did DP-700 replace DP-203?
In effect, yes. DP-203 retired on 31 March 2025, and Microsoft replaced the DP-203 course with the DP-700 course. DP-700 focuses on Microsoft Fabric, so previous Azure data engineering preparation still needs to be matched against its current study guide. DP-600 remains a separate, live analytics engineering certification.
Do Fabric certifications expire?
Yes, both expire after 12 months. Microsoft's renewal process lets you renew free with an online, open-book, unproctored assessment during the six-month renewal window. Plan for renewal before the credential expires.
