CLF-C02 Practice Question 51: Operational Excellence Principles
AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) · Test 6 · question 1 of 10
An operations team ships one large release per quarter. An engineer deploys each release by hand, following a 60-step runbook. Releases often break something, and rolling back takes most of a night. Which design principles of the AWS Well-Architected Framework operational excellence pillar should the team apply to fix this? (Choose TWO.)

Answers:
Make frequent, small, reversible changes addresses the size of the releases. Smaller, incremental changes shipped with automated deployment techniques reduce the blast radius when something fails and make reversing a change faster. Safely automate where possible addresses the manual runbook. In the cloud, a workload and its operations (applications, infrastructure, configuration and procedures) can be defined as code and run automatically with guardrails, which gives consistent results and limits human error.
The other three are real Well-Architected design principles, but from other pillars and aimed at other problems. Option A, scaling horizontally, is a reliability principle: replace one large resource with several small ones so that one failure has less impact. Option C, adopting a consumption model, is a cost optimization principle about paying only for the resources you use. Option E, stop guessing capacity, is a reliability principle about monitoring demand and adding or removing resources automatically. None of the three changes how releases are built or deployed.
