Free cloud certifications in 2026: which are really free

The only major cloud certifications anyone can earn for free in 2026 are Oracle's: OCI Foundations Associate, OCI Architect Associate and its AI Foundations exams cost nothing, with no voucher needed. AWS, Microsoft and Google give away their training, but their exams are paid unless you qualify for a specific programme: a student scheme, a return-to-work course or an employer's cohort. Most "free cloud certification" lists blur that line, which is why people book an exam expecting it to be free and find a US$99-$150 fee at checkout.

This guide sorts out the three meanings of "free", then goes vendor by vendor: what is actually free, who qualifies, what the exam normally costs in US dollars and rupees, and how to sign up. At the end it suggests which free route to take first. Every programme was checked on the vendor's own pages on 4 November 2026.

Three kinds of "free"

When a page calls a cloud certification free, it means one of three things:

The exam itself is free. You pay nothing and need no code. In 2026 this is Oracle's free OCI certifications.
A free voucher you have to earn. The exam normally costs money, but a programme gives you a voucher if you qualify and finish its requirements. AWS Student Rewards, AWS re/Start and Google's cohort programmes work like this.
Free training only. The courses, labs and badges are free; the certification exam isn't. This is the default at AWS, Microsoft and Google.

A fourth thing is sometimes called a free certification: a course completion certificate or a skill badge. Those are worth having, but they aren't certifications, and recruiters can tell the difference.

Oracle free certification: exams for anyone

Oracle University runs free training and free certification exams through Oracle MyLearn. As of November 2026 the free certifications include:

OCI Foundations Associate (exam 1Z0-1085-26).
OCI Architect Associate (exam 1Z0-1072-26), which Oracle made completely free in its 2026 update; its blog says the Foundations certifications "continue to be offered for free" and that the Architect Associate course and certification "are now completely free".
OCI AI Foundations (1Z0-1122-26), Agentic AI Foundations (1Z0-1157-26) and Fusion Foundations.

Anyone with a free Oracle account qualifies. There are no student, regional or employer conditions, and Oracle recommends its free courses but doesn't require them. The exams are taken online, unproctored, straight from MyLearn. As of November 2026, Foundations exams have 40 questions in 60 minutes with a 65% pass mark, and the Architect Associate has 50-55 questions in 90 minutes with a 68% pass mark.

The 2026 versions launched on 10 August 2026, and the 2025 versions retired on 22 June 2026, so make sure the exam code you study for ends in -26. Credentials are valid for 24 months. Outside the free list, Oracle Associate and Professional exams cost US$245 (about ₹20,567 plus tax) and paid Foundations exams US$95.

AWS: free training, vouchers you have to earn

AWS's training is free; its exams aren't. The free parts:

AWS Skill Builder's free tier, open to everyone, with digital courses for every exam.
AWS Educate, free cloud training for anyone aged 13 or over.
AWS Student Rewards, for verified students: earn 21 badges and you get a free exam voucher.
AWS re/Start, a training programme for people who are out of work, which includes a voucher.

Everyone else pays. As of November 2026 the foundational exams, Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) and AI Practitioner (AIF-C01), cost US$100, or ₹8,553 before tax when you buy a voucher in rupees from Pearson's voucher store. Associate exams cost US$150 (₹12,829.50). Both foundational exams have 65 questions in 90 minutes and need 700 to pass.

The standard benefit once you pass: any AWS exam earns you a voucher for 50% off your next one. So the cheapest way to two AWS certifications is to start with the one you most want and use the discount on the second. AWS certifications are valid for three years.

Microsoft: free training, Applied Skills and renewals

Microsoft's free offer is broader than it looks, even though the certification exams are paid:

Microsoft Learn training modules and learning paths are free.
Applied Skills credentials are free. Each is a lab-based assessment of 12-16 hands-on tasks in 30-45 minutes, such as building a generative AI chat app with the Foundry SDK. They never expire.
Renewals are free. Role-based certifications expire after a year, and you renew them by passing a free online assessment. Fundamentals certifications don't expire at all.

What's no longer free: Microsoft Virtual Training Days used to give a free exam voucher for attending, and that ended on 28 March 2023. The events now offer discounts or training only, so a page that promises a free AZ-900 voucher from them is out of date. Microsoft's student discount also excludes India and China.

As of November 2026, fundamentals exams such as AZ-900 cost US$99, or ₹3,696 in India, and run 45 minutes. Associate exams cost US$165 in the United States. The newer AI fundamentals exam is AI-901, which replaced AI-900 when it retired on 30 June 2026; the AI-901 guide covers it. Is Google Cloud certification free? Training yes, exams through programmes

Google's training now lives under Google Skills (the brand that replaced Google Cloud Skills Boost), and its learning paths and skill badges are free. The certification exams are not free by default. Free vouchers come through programmes:

GEAR Get Certified cohorts give vouchers for Cloud Digital Leader, Associate Cloud Engineer and Professional Cloud Architect, but you need a customer company's email address and must complete the cohort's milestones.
Google Cloud Partner Advantage gives vouchers to people at partner companies.
Students can get 50% vouchers through Career Launchpad cohorts.

Otherwise, as of November 2026, Cloud Digital Leader costs US$99 (50-60 questions in 90 minutes), Associate Cloud Engineer US$125 (50-60 questions in 120 minutes), and Professional exams US$200, plus local tax; Google doesn't list rupee prices. Foundational and associate certifications are valid for three years.

Keeping it: validity and renewal compared

A free exam is only half the cost question; the other half is what it takes to keep the certification. The four vendors differ a lot, as of November 2026:

Oracle: OCI credentials are valid for 24 months. You renew by passing the current version of the exam or a free recertification assessment.
AWS: certifications last three years. You renew by passing the exam again (with your 50% voucher), by passing a higher-level exam, or, for Cloud Practitioner, through AWS Cloud Quest.
Microsoft: fundamentals certifications such as AZ-900 never expire, and neither do Applied Skills. Role-based certifications last one year and renew for free online.
Google Cloud: foundational and associate certifications last three years. You can renew through continuing education on Google Skills or by taking a paid renewal exam.

So Microsoft and Oracle are the cheapest to keep, since their renewals cost nothing (and Microsoft's fundamentals never expire), while AWS and Google are the easiest to leave alone for a while (three years). Oracle's two-year window is the shortest.

Which free route to take first

It depends on what you want the certification for.

You want a real certification at zero cost, now: take OCI Foundations Associate, then OCI Architect Associate. Both are free to anyone, and the Architect Associate is a real associate exam, not a course badge.
You're a student aiming at AWS: use AWS Educate and Skill Builder, then earn the Student Rewards voucher for Cloud Practitioner or AI Practitioner.
You're between jobs: look at AWS re/Start, which pairs training with a voucher.
Your employer uses Google Cloud: ask about GEAR Get Certified, which needs a customer company email.
You want Azure skills on your CV without paying: earn Applied Skills credentials while you save for AZ-900 or an associate exam. They don't expire, and they show hands-on work.

Is a free cloud certification worth listing?

Yes, if it's a real certification. OCI Foundations and Architect Associate are the same credentials Oracle used to charge for; free doesn't make them course badges. A course certificate or skill badge is worth listing under training, not certifications. Paid AWS, Azure and Google certifications still carry more weight in most job adverts, simply because more companies run on those clouds, so a free Oracle certification works best as a first step or a second cloud, not instead of the platform your target employers use.
