CLF-C02 Practice Question 95: EBS Encryption Default
AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) · Test 10 · question 5 of 10
A company's policy requires every new Amazon EBS volume it creates to be encrypted, even if an engineer forgets to select encryption when launching an instance. The company works in two AWS Regions. What should it do?
Show answer and explanation
Answer:
EBS encryption by default configures an AWS account to enforce encryption of the new EBS volumes and snapshot copies it creates. Volumes created when an instance launches are encrypted automatically, whether or not the engineer remembers to choose encryption. It is a Region-specific setting, so the company must turn it on in both Regions. It has no effect on existing volumes or snapshots, which must be encrypted separately if needed.
Option B changes S3 settings, which don't affect EBS volumes attached to EC2 instances (and new S3 objects are already encrypted by default). Option C creates backups, and a snapshot of an unencrypted volume is itself unencrypted, so this does nothing for the encryption requirement. Option D changes how often key material is rotated. It doesn't make any volume use encryption in the first place.
