About the DOP-C02 exam

AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional is a professional-level exam for engineers who automate how software is built, released and run on AWS. AWS recommends at least two years of provisioning, operating and managing AWS environments, plus experience with the software development lifecycle and with programming or scripting.

Questions are long, detailed scenarios, often across several accounts in AWS Organizations. A deployment needs to roll back automatically when an alarm fires, a CloudFormation stack is stuck in a failed update, logs from fifty accounts need to land in one place, or a drifted configuration has to be fixed without anyone logging in. Two or three options will usually work. The right one is the most automated, least manual and most reliable way to meet every stated requirement, so reading the scenario carefully matters as much as knowing the services.

Exam format

  • Questions: 75, multiple choice (one answer from four) or multiple response (two or more answers from five or more). 10 of the 75 are unscored trial questions, and you can't tell which ones.
  • Time: 180 minutes, so about 2 minutes 20 seconds per question.
  • Passing score: 750 on a scaled score from 100 to 1,000.
  • Cost: 300 USD, at a Pearson VUE test center or online with a remote proctor.
  • Validity: 3 years.
  • Languages: English, Japanese, Korean and Simplified Chinese. AWS has announced that the Korean version retires after December 31, 2026.

What the exam covers

The official exam guide has six domains:

  • SDLC Automation (22%). CodePipeline, CodeBuild, CodeDeploy and CodeArtifact; source from GitHub or other providers; deployment strategies such as blue/green, canary and rolling for EC2, ECS and Lambda; and automated testing and rollback.
  • Configuration Management and IaC (17%). CloudFormation (change sets, StackSets, custom resources, drift detection, deletion policies), the AWS CDK, Systems Manager and multi-account setups with Organizations and Service Catalog.
  • Resilient Cloud Solutions (15%). Auto Scaling, lifecycle hooks and warm pools, multi-Region designs with DynamoDB global tables, Aurora Global Database and Route 53, and choosing a disaster recovery strategy for a given RTO and RPO.
  • Monitoring and Logging (15%). CloudWatch metrics, alarms, Logs Insights and the agent, cross-account log aggregation, X-Ray tracing and Synthetics canaries.
  • Incident and Event Response (14%). EventBridge rules that start automated remediation through Systems Manager Automation, Lambda or Step Functions, AWS Health events, and fault injection testing.
  • Security and Compliance (17%). IAM roles, permissions boundaries and Identity Center, SCPs, AWS Config rules and conformance packs, Security Hub, Inspector and Secrets Manager.

How the practice questions here are organised

There are 10 practice tests of 10 questions each. Every test covers all six domains, so each one is a mixed sample of the exam rather than a single-topic drill. There is no full-length practice exam for DOP-C02 here yet. Each question explains why the correct answer is the best fit and why each other option is weaker, with a link to the AWS documentation it is based on.

A study plan that works

  • Take Test 1 cold and note which domains you miss most.
  • Build a small pipeline yourself: CodePipeline, CodeBuild and CodeDeploy with a canary or blue/green deployment that rolls back on a CloudWatch alarm. Hands-on time with these makes the scenarios far easier to read.
  • Learn CloudFormation's failure modes, such as UPDATE_ROLLBACK_FAILED, creation policies and stack import, because questions often start from something already broken.
  • For every question, look for the constraint that removes the plausible options: "fewest manual steps", "across all accounts" or "without downtime".
  • Practise your pace. Three hours is long, so time a few tests at around two minutes per question.
