Best DevOps certification: AWS, Azure, Google or CKA

Updated 27 October 2026 · 13 min read

The best DevOps certification is the one for the platform you operate: DOP-C02 for AWS, AZ-400 for Azure, Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer for Google Cloud, or CKA for Kubernetes. These are not interchangeable beginner badges: the three cloud options are advanced paths, and AZ-400 also requires an Azure associate certification before you can earn the Expert credential.

This guide compares the four options, shows what each proves, and gives you a first-certification path based on your role, experience, and target platform. It also separates free official learning from a free certification, covers what the exams cost in India and Singapore, and points you to focused practice after you have learned the objectives.

How DevOps certifications are organised

A DevOps role crosses software delivery, infrastructure, reliability, observability, and security. That is why a vendor's DevOps credential is usually built for people who already make production decisions on that vendor's platform, not for somebody encountering cloud operations for the first time. Pick the environment where you need to be credible before you compare an exam's question count or listed fee.

AWS Certified DevOps Engineer - Professional, Microsoft Certified: DevOps Engineer Expert, and Google Cloud Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer all test a cloud-specific way of running delivery and operations. CKA is the cloud-neutral choice in this comparison: it is relevant when operating Kubernetes is central to the work, including on a managed cloud service. It does not replace the cloud-specific knowledge an employer needs for its own services, identities, and deployment tools.

None of the cloud DevOps paths is a general-purpose first certification. If you are new to cloud work or are a manager who needs shared vocabulary rather than an engineering assessment, start with the beginner cloud certification guide. Choose an implementation exam later, when you can relate its objectives to work you have done or can practise in a lab.

AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional (DOP-C02)

AWS Certified DevOps Engineer - Professional is live. It is the AWS option here and is aimed at DevOps engineers who provision, operate, and manage distributed AWS systems.

  • Official name and code: AWS Certified DevOps Engineer - Professional (DOP-C02).
  • Status and key dates: live as of October 2026.
  • Who it is for: DevOps engineers working with distributed AWS systems.
  • Prerequisites: no mandatory training or earlier exam. AWS recommends two years of AWS experience, plus SDLC and programming or scripting experience.
  • Format (as of October 2026): 75 multiple-choice or multiple-response questions in 180 minutes.
  • Passing score: 750 on AWS's scaled 100 to 1,000 score.
  • Price (as of October 2026): US$300; ₹25,659 through Pearson Mindhub vouchers.
  • Delivery: online proctoring or a Pearson VUE testing centre.
  • Validity and renewal: valid for three years; the current exam renews it, while an open-beta AWS Skill Builder maintenance route adds one year.
  • What it covers: SDLC automation (22%), configuration management and infrastructure as code (17%), resilient cloud solutions (15%), monitoring and logging (15%), incident and event response (14%), and security and compliance (17%).
  • Free official preparation: AWS provides an Exam Prep Plan and an Official Practice Question Set on AWS Skill Builder.

The breadth is the clue to whether DOP-C02 fits. It is for someone who must connect deployment, infrastructure, monitoring, incident response, and security in AWS, rather than someone who only uses a pipeline. If you are coming from AWS operations, the AWS CloudOps Engineer Associate guide is a useful check on whether you have the operational base before moving to the Professional level.

Practise decisions, not service-name recall. Use a practice question on Lambda canary deployment rollback to reason about a safe release and automated reversal, then a practice question on a manual approval production gate to distinguish a controlled release gate from a fully automated deployment.

Microsoft DevOps Engineer Expert (AZ-400)

Microsoft Certified: DevOps Engineer Expert is live, and AZ-400 is its required exam. It is the Azure choice for developers or infrastructure administrators who deliver Microsoft DevOps solutions.

  • Official name and code: Microsoft Certified: DevOps Engineer Expert; AZ-400: Designing and Implementing Microsoft DevOps Solutions.
  • Status and key dates: live, with no retirement date; the English exam was updated July 27, 2026.
  • Who it is for: developers or infrastructure administrators delivering Microsoft DevOps solutions.
  • Prerequisites: earn Azure Administrator Associate or Azure Developer Associate, then pass AZ-400.
  • Format (as of October 2026): typically 40 to 60 questions; 100 minutes without labs or 120 minutes with labs. Microsoft does not publish the specific question formats or identify lab use before registration.
  • Passing score: 700.
  • Price (as of October 2026): Microsoft says associate and expert exams typically cost US$165, with the fee set by the country or region where you take the exam.
  • Delivery: online proctoring or a local test centre.
  • Validity and renewal: expires annually; renewal is free online during a six-month eligibility window.
  • What it covers: development processes (10-15%), source control (10-15%), build and release pipelines (50-55%), security and compliance planning (10-15%), and instrumentation (5-10%).
  • Free official preparation: Microsoft Learn provides prep videos, a study guide, exam sandbox, and practice assessment.

AZ-400 is different because the certification itself includes a prerequisite route. The best choice between the administrator and developer prerequisite depends on the work you already do: choose the path that matches whether you operate Azure infrastructure or build applications on it. The Azure certification path helps you map that choice before treating AZ-400 as a standalone first exam.

The published weighting makes pipelines the centre of the assessment, but the surrounding security and instrumentation objectives still matter. Learn to describe why a release process is safe, observable, and repeatable instead of memorising a screen or a sequence of clicks.

Google Cloud Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer

Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer is live and open for registration. It is for DevOps professionals balancing reliable production systems with delivery speed, performance, and cost on Google Cloud.

  • Official name and code: Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer; Google publishes no exam code.
  • Status and key dates: live as of October 2026.
  • Who it is for: DevOps professionals balancing reliable production systems with delivery speed, performance, and cost.
  • Prerequisites: none. Google recommends more than three years of industry experience, including more than one year designing and managing Google Cloud production systems.
  • Format (as of October 2026): 50 to 60 multiple-choice questions in two hours.
  • Passing score: Google gives pass/fail results and does not publish a numeric passing score.
  • Price (as of October 2026): US$200 plus applicable tax; the official page does not list an INR price.
  • Delivery: remote online proctoring or onsite proctoring at a testing centre.
  • Validity and renewal: valid for two years. A designated Google Skills renewal route has one-year validity.
  • What it covers (approximate weights): bootstrapping and maintaining a Google Cloud organization (about 20%); CI/CD pipelines with continuous testing (about 25%); applying site reliability engineering practices (about 18%); observability and troubleshooting (about 25%); and optimizing performance and cost (about 12%).
  • Free official preparation: the public exam guide and sample questions are free; Google also offers a 15-activity learning path.

This is a good match when SRE practice and Google Cloud operations are the work you want to validate. A practice question on SLO burn-rate alerting is useful for separating an urgent page from slower error-budget consumption. A practice question on Binary Authorization attestations adds the delivery security angle: enforce trustworthy build provenance while retaining a controlled exception path.

CKA: the cloud-neutral DevOps certification

CKA is the cloud-neutral option when Kubernetes platform work is the common thread across your target environments. It is a hands-on exam: you fix and configure a live cluster at the command line instead of choosing answers, which makes it a different kind of test from the three cloud exams.

  • Official name and code: Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), from the Linux Foundation and CNCF.
  • Status and key dates: live; as of October 2026 the exam is based on Kubernetes v1.37.
  • Who it is for: people performing Kubernetes administrator responsibilities.
  • Prerequisites: none.
  • Format (as of October 2026): command-line performance tasks in two hours; the question count is not published.
  • Passing score: 66% or above.
  • Price (as of October 2026): US$445, including two attempts and two Killer.sh simulator sessions; no INR price is listed.
  • Delivery: online, proctored through PSI Bridge; no test-centre option is listed.
  • Validity and renewal: valid for 24 months; renew by passing the same exam again.
  • What it covers: Troubleshooting (30%); Cluster Architecture, Installation & Configuration (25%); Services & Networking (20%); Workloads & Scheduling (15%); and Storage (10%).
  • Free official preparation: the Linux Foundation's free Introduction to Kubernetes course.

The CKA exam guide covers buying, booking and each domain in detail. The Kubernetes certification guide compares CKA with CKAD and CKS.

The two topic examples show why CKA complements a cloud DevOps credential instead of duplicating it. Use a practice question on a ConfigMap change rollout to check what happens when values reach a Pod as environment variables. Then use a practice question on NetworkPolicy default deny and DNS to connect an egress restriction to the cluster service traffic it can accidentally block.

How they differ

The platform is the primary difference. The format, price and renewal details below are as of October 2026.

  • AWS: Professional-level AWS operations, delivery, incident response, and compliance. / Azure: an Expert credential focused heavily on pipelines, earned after an Azure Administrator Associate or Azure Developer Associate prerequisite. / Google Cloud: a Professional credential combining CI/CD, SRE, observability, and performance or cost decisions. / CKA: a cloud-neutral Kubernetes path for platform, DevOps, and SRE work.
  • AWS: 75 questions in 180 minutes, with multiple-choice and multiple-response formats. / Azure: typically 40 to 60 questions, with 100 or 120 minutes depending on labs, whose use Microsoft does not disclose before registration. / Google Cloud: 50 to 60 multiple-choice questions in two hours. / CKA: hands-on command-line tasks in two hours, with no published question count.
  • AWS: no mandatory prior certification, but AWS recommends substantial AWS and SDLC experience. / Azure: requires an Azure Administrator Associate or Azure Developer Associate. / Google Cloud: no prerequisite, but recommends production Google Cloud experience. / CKA: no prerequisite.
  • AWS: US$300, with an India voucher price listed. / Azure: typically US$165, priced by the country where you test. / Google Cloud: US$200 plus tax, with no listed INR price. / CKA: US$445, including a second attempt and two simulator sessions.
  • AWS: three-year validity. / Azure: annual expiry with free online renewal. / Google Cloud: two-year validity, with a designated-learning renewal route that adds one year. / CKA: 24-month validity, renewed by passing the exam again.

Which DevOps certification should you take first

Start from your next role, not from a generic ranking. A credential can validate work you understand; it cannot replace the experience its objectives assume.

  • You are a beginner: skip these advanced DevOps exams for now. Start with the beginner cloud certification guide, use free official material, and then choose the cloud your target team uses.
  • You are an AWS developer, sysadmin, or CloudOps practitioner: take DOP-C02 when you have enough AWS, SDLC, and scripting experience to explain production trade-offs. If your base is still operations rather than end-to-end DevOps, use the CloudOps guide above before you book.
  • You are an Azure administrator or developer: plan the Azure associate route first, then AZ-400. This is the clearest path when Azure and its delivery tooling are already your work environment.
  • You already run production Google Cloud systems: choose Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer when you need a Google Cloud credential that connects reliability, delivery, observability, and cost.
  • You run Kubernetes across environments: make CKA the Kubernetes choice, then use a cloud-specific credential if your role also owns a particular provider's services.
  • You are a manager: none of these is designed as a manager certification. A foundation credential can give you the vocabulary to work with the delivery team; choose a technical path only when you will be expected to assess or perform the associated engineering work.
  • Your goal is DevSecOps: first decide whether your work is cloud delivery security, Kubernetes security, or a broader security role. For the Kubernetes route, use the Kubernetes certification guide rather than treating a general DevOps certification as a security-specialist substitute.

Is there a free DevOps certification?

When people search for a DevOps certification free of charge, what they usually find is free preparation: the official learning can be free, but these exams are not free as of October 2026. AWS offers an Exam Prep Plan and an Official Practice Question Set; Microsoft offers a study guide, videos, sandbox, and practice assessment; Google offers an exam guide and sample questions. These are good first passes through the objectives, not a replacement for applying the material.

Use practice questions after you can explain the official objectives in your own words. Start with AWS DOP-C02 practice questions and the DOP-C02 question list, Google Cloud DevOps Engineer practice questions and the Google Cloud DevOps Engineer question list, and CKA practice questions with the CKA question list. The practice questions on CI/CD and DevOps practices and CI/CD and DevOps practices question list are a topic resource, not an exam certification.

For pipeline work across platforms, use a practice question on pipeline secrets to test whether a secret stays out of source and container images while an artifact moves through environments. Follow it with a practice question on canary versus blue-green deployments to choose a release strategy from rollback, exposure, and measurement needs.

DevOps certification cost in India and Singapore

As of October 2026, the list prices are US$300 for DOP-C02, typically US$165 for AZ-400, US$200 plus applicable tax for Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer, and US$445 for CKA. AWS also lists ₹25,659 through Pearson Mindhub vouchers, and Microsoft sets the AZ-400 fee by the country where you take the exam, so the Indian and Singapore amounts appear when you schedule it. Google does not list an INR price on its official page.

AWS's price table has no Singapore dollar column, and the Linux Foundation lists no INR price for CKA, so a card conversion of a US price is only an estimate. Check the booking page for the country in which the exam will be proctored, including applicable tax. For the AWS-specific details and preparation route, see the AWS certification cost guide.

Budget for the whole route, not just the final exam. AZ-400 requires an Azure associate certification before the Expert credential, while the other cloud exams have no formal earlier exam requirement but recommend substantial relevant experience. A free study guide can reduce your preparation cost; it does not make a paid proctored exam free.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best certification for a DevOps engineer?

Choose the certification for the platform you will operate. DOP-C02 is the AWS choice, AZ-400 is the Azure Expert route, Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer is for Google Cloud, and CKA is the cloud-neutral Kubernetes option. The best one is the credential whose objectives match work you can explain and practise.

What is the best DevOps certification for beginners?

None of the three cloud DevOps certifications here is positioned as a beginner exam. Start with a cloud foundation appropriate to your target platform, build a small operational or delivery project, and move to a role-based exam when the objectives describe work you understand. The beginner cloud certification guide explains the first cloud choices.

Is AWS DevOps certification difficult?

DOP-C02, the DevOps AWS certification, spans delivery automation, infrastructure as code, resilient systems, monitoring, incidents, and security. AWS recommends two years of AWS experience plus SDLC and scripting experience, which is a useful signal that it is not an introductory test. Prepare by connecting each domain to an AWS system you have built or can reproduce in a lab.

Is AZ-400 worth it?

As an Azure DevOps certification, it is worth considering when you work in an Azure environment and can complete the required Azure Administrator Associate or Azure Developer Associate path. Its largest published objective area is build and release pipelines, but it also tests source control, security, and instrumentation. It is a poor shortcut if you need a first cloud credential or do not expect to work with Azure DevOps solutions.

Which DevOps certification is best for managers?

These are engineering credentials, so the best DevOps certification for managers is usually a foundation credential rather than an advanced implementation exam. A manager can benefit from the shared vocabulary of a foundational cloud path, then learn enough of the team's delivery and reliability practices to ask useful questions. Do not take an advanced implementation exam only because its title contains DevOps.

Which certification is best for DevSecOps?

A DevSecOps certification should match the security work you will actually do: cloud delivery controls, Kubernetes controls, or a broader security role are different scopes. For Kubernetes-focused security, follow the linked Kubernetes certification guide to choose the relevant path after your platform foundation is in place.
