Best cloud security certification in 2026: which one first
Choose a cloud security certification for the platform you secure: AWS Certified Security - Specialty (SCS-C03) for AWS, SC-500 for Microsoft, Google Professional Cloud Security Engineer for Google Cloud, CKS for Kubernetes, or CCSP once you have broad security experience. The main difference is scope: the first four validate work in a particular platform or in Kubernetes, whereas CCSP is vendor-neutral and has an experience requirement.
This guide compares the current exams, their costs and formats, and the cloud security certification path that fits a move into the field. It also explains where DevSecOps fits and how practice reinforces hands-on work.
The short answer
There is no single best cloud security certification for every role. Start with the cloud your team uses if you already secure its workloads: SCS-C03 for AWS, SC-500 for Microsoft cloud and AI workloads, or Professional Cloud Security Engineer for Google Cloud. Choose CKS only when you already run Kubernetes and can meet its CKA prerequisite; choose CCSP later when your experience already spans cloud security beyond one provider.
Prices alone can mislead: CKS includes a simulator, CCSP has ongoing maintenance, and Microsoft does not publish a numeric SC-500 fee. Use practice to find a concept you cannot yet explain or perform.
What they cost, and where practice fits
The published prices as of October 2026 are US$300 for SCS-C03, US$200 plus applicable tax for Google Professional Cloud Security Engineer, US$445 for CKS, and US$599 for CCSP in Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas. AWS also lists ₹25,659 for Specialty vouchers; Microsoft says SC-500 pricing depends on the country or region and gives no figure. Google, CKS, and CCSP list no INR price.
For practice after you know the objectives, use the CKS practice test and CKS question list, or the security fundamentals practice test and security fundamentals question list. They check the concepts the exams build on; they are not vendor exam simulations, and they don't replace the official material or a lab.
Before a cloud security certification: the foundations
If you are new to cloud work, first learn identity, access control, networking, logging, encryption, and shared responsibility in the cloud you expect to use. Microsoft SC-900 is live as a fundamentals credential; see the beginner cloud certification guide for broader starting points. Understand why a permission is needed rather than memorising service names.
Begin with identity, because most security exams test the difference between proving identity and granting access. Try a practice question on authn vs authz when you can explain why a successful sign-in and a denied request are different events. Then try a practice question on TLS to connect a handshake with the encryption used for application traffic.
AWS candidates should also be able to divide customer work from provider work before studying services; the AWS shared responsibility model and AWS IAM roles, users and policies are useful starting points. Use a practice question on least privilege to turn the principle into a permission decision. Use a small lab or familiar system so the domains describe work you have configured or reviewed.
AWS Certified Security – Specialty (SCS-C03)
AWS Certified Security - Specialty is live. SCS-C03 has been the current exam since December 2, 2025, replacing SCS-C02; do not study for or book the older code. Choose it when AWS IAM, detection, incident response, and data protection are already part of your work. It has no practice bank here, so prepare to the current SCS-C03 objectives, not its retired predecessor.
Microsoft SC-500: Cloud and AI Security Engineer Associate (replaced AZ-500)
Microsoft Certified: Cloud and AI Security Engineer Associate is live and schedulable through Pearson VUE. It replaces Azure Security Engineer Associate (AZ-500), which retired on August 31, 2026; an earned AZ-500 credential remains on a transcript until its expiry, but you can no longer earn or renew it. SC-500 adds security for AI workloads to the cloud and hybrid security focus.

- Delivery: Pearson VUE, proctored.
- Validity and renewal: the certification page does not state a validity period or renewal route; do not assume one from AZ-500.
- Domains: manage identity, access, and governance 20-25%; secure storage, databases, and networking 25-30%; secure compute 20-25%, including AI security; manage and monitor security posture 20-25%, including Defender for Cloud, Sentinel, and Security Copilot.
The free official material includes the SC-500 study guide and exam sandbox. A Practice Assessment is not currently available; Microsoft says those assessments usually arrive within eight weeks after an exam leaves beta and becomes generally available. Use the study guide and an Azure or hybrid lab rather than infer the old AZ-500 blueprint.
Google Professional Cloud Security Engineer
Professional Cloud Security Engineer is live and open for registration. Google publishes no exam code; PCSE is the usual abbreviation. It is a Professional-tier certification for people who design, implement, and manage secure Google Cloud workloads rather than a general security credential.
- Issuer and level: Google Cloud Certified; Professional level.
- Who it is for: cloud security engineers and architects working across access, communications, data, operations, and compliance in Google Cloud.
- Prerequisites and experience: no formal prerequisite. Google recommends more than three years of industry experience, including more than one year designing and managing Google Cloud solutions.

Google provides a free exam guide and official sample questions. Its Google Skills learning path is partly free and has subscription content. Choose this exam for Google Cloud security design, not simply for a vendor-neutral title.
Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist (CKS)
Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist is live and open for enrolment. It is the practical cloud-native security path here: you work through command-line tasks on Kubernetes. The vendor page says it is based on Kubernetes v1.35 as of October 2026.
- Issuer and level: created by the Linux Foundation and CNCF; the advanced security specialist step after CKA.
- Who it is for: accomplished Kubernetes practitioners who hold the CKA and secure container-based applications and platforms across build, deployment, and runtime.
- Prerequisites and experience: you must have taken and passed CKA first; Kubernetes.io says you must hold a current CKA, so schedule CKS while your CKA remains valid.
- Format and time (as of October 2026): 15-20 performance-based command-line tasks in two hours, with no multiple-choice questions.
- Pass mark: 67% or above.

Free official preparation includes Introduction to Kubernetes (LFS158), the CKS curriculum, and exam tips. The usual purchase also includes the Killer.sh simulator, except for CKS-SINGLE; use it late as a timed rehearsal.
Before that, check your hardening basics with a practice question on kubelet hardening, which asks how to shut off anonymous access to the kubelet. Then use a practice question on Secrets at rest to distinguish configuring encryption from rewriting existing data.
ISC2 CCSP, and CCSK
ISC2 Certified Cloud Security Professional is live. Its current six-domain outline has applied since August 1, 2026, and it is now computerized adaptive testing worldwide. It is a vendor-neutral credential for established security people, not a first certification without the required experience.
- Issuer and level: ISC2; a vendor-neutral specialist credential alongside CISSP and CSSLP.
- Who it is for: cloud architects, engineers, consultants, administrators, analysts, specialists, auditors, and developers who secure cloud data, applications, and infrastructure.
- Prerequisites and experience: five years in IT, including three years in cybersecurity and one year in a CCSP domain. A degree or CCSK waives one year, while CISSP waives all experience.

ISC2 offers a free outline, interactive flash cards, and self-study resource list. Use real architecture, governance, and security work to decide whether you are ready. There is no CCSP practice bank here.
CCSK v5 from the Cloud Security Alliance is a vendor-neutral knowledge certificate to consider before CCSP when you need a shorter theory-focused step. Its format as of October 2026 is open-book and online: 60 multiple-choice questions in 120 minutes with an 80% pass mark. It can waive one year of CCSP experience, but does not replace the broader work experience required for CCSP.
How they differ
This is about fit, not a universal difficulty ranking. Formats and prices below are as of October 2026.
- AWS: a Specialty AWS security credential with broad AWS identity, data, incident, and detection coverage. / Microsoft: an Associate credential for cloud, hybrid, and AI security controls. / Google: a Professional Google Cloud security design credential. / CKS: a hands-on Kubernetes security exam after CKA. / CCSP: a vendor-neutral credential for experienced cloud security professionals.
- AWS: 65 questions in 170 minutes, US$300, and three-year validity. / Microsoft: 120 minutes, a 700 pass mark, and region-based unpublished pricing. / Google: 50-60 multiple- choice questions in two hours, US$200 plus tax, and two-year validity. / CKS: 15-20 hands- on tasks in two hours, US$445, and two-year validity. / CCSP: adaptive 100-150-item testing in three hours, US$599 in Asia-Pacific, and a three-year maintenance cycle.

DevSecOps and DevOps security certifications
DevSecOps is a way of putting security controls into delivery and operations, not one provider's exam category. If your work is securing a cloud provider's identities, data, and workload services, choose that provider's security path. If you secure container images, admission, runtime controls, and clusters, CKS is the more direct assessment after CKA. If you are searching for a DevSecOps certification, the closest fit among these is CKS for cluster and supply-chain controls, paired with the security exam of the cloud you deploy to.
For the delivery and operations side, see the best DevOps certification guide; for the Kubernetes sequence, see the best Kubernetes certification guide. A cloud credential and CKS can complement each other, but neither is a shortcut for the other: one tests provider controls and the other tests Kubernetes security tasks.
Which cloud security certification should you take? (by situation)
Choose from the work you need to do, then check that you meet the stated experience or prerequisite. This avoids paying for an exam unrelated to your role.
- You are new to cloud security: start with security fundamentals and a cloud foundation route, build IAM and encryption practice, then choose the provider used by the role you want. Do not start with the vendor-neutral CCSP or the Kubernetes-specific CKS.
- You secure AWS workloads: take SCS-C03 after you have AWS security experience. It is the direct option for AWS detection, incident response, IAM, infrastructure, and data protection.
- You secure Microsoft cloud or hybrid systems: plan SC-500, not AZ-500. Use it when Azure, Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft 365, and AI-workload security are part of your work.
- You design security for Google Cloud: choose Professional Cloud Security Engineer when you can relate its access, communications, data, operations, and compliance domains to Google Cloud systems you have worked with.
- You run Kubernetes platforms: pass CKA first, then take CKS while CKA is current. Its performance format suits people who must harden and investigate clusters rather than only discuss policies.
- You already work across clouds: consider CCSP after you satisfy its experience rule. Add a provider credential later when an employer needs evidence of work in a particular cloud.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best cloud security certification for beginners?
Start with a foundation path in the cloud you expect to use, plus IAM, encryption, and least privilege. SCS-C03, PCSE, CKS, and CCSP all assume experience, a prerequisite, or both. SC-900 is live for a Microsoft fundamentals route, while the beginner cloud certification guide can help you choose a broader starting point.
Is AZ-500 still available?
No. Microsoft retired AZ-500, its certification, and its renewal assessments on August 31, 2026, and it can no longer be earned or renewed. If you are choosing a Microsoft exam now, use SC-500; AZ-500 is relevant only as the predecessor of an existing credential on someone's transcript.
CCSP vs AWS Security Specialty: which one?
Choose SCS-C03 when you need to prove AWS-specific security work and already have the recommended AWS experience. Choose CCSP when you have the required broader IT and cybersecurity experience and need a vendor-neutral credential. They can complement each other, but taking CCSP first does not remove the need to know AWS services in an AWS security role.
CCSP vs CCSK?
CCSK v5 is an open-book, online knowledge certificate with 60 questions in 120 minutes and an 80% pass mark. CCSP is an adaptive, test-centre-only professional credential with an experience rule, ongoing CPE requirement, and annual maintenance fee. CCSK can waive one year of the CCSP experience requirement, but it is not an equivalent replacement.
How much do cloud security certifications cost?
As of October 2026, SCS-C03 is US$300, PCSE is US$200 plus tax, CKS is US$445, and CCSP is US$599 in Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas. AWS also lists ₹25,659 for a Specialty voucher; Microsoft gives country- or region-based SC-500 pricing without a number. Include renewal costs and the cost of any prerequisite route when you compare the total spend.
Do I need a certification to work in cloud security?
No. A certification can help you show an employer a defined set of knowledge or practical skills, but it does not replace operating, securing, or reviewing real systems. Use it to structure learning and document a role-relevant capability, then support it with labs, projects, or work experience you can explain.
