CLF-C02 Practice Question 62: Rehost Server Migration
AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) · Test 7 · question 2 of 10
A company must leave its data center within three months. It has about 200 physical servers and VMware virtual machines running Windows and Linux, and there is no time to change the applications. The company wants the servers continuously replicated to AWS, so that the final cutover for each server takes only minutes. Which AWS service should it use?
Show answer and explanation
Answer:
AWS Application Migration Service (now branded AWS Transform MGN, and often called MGN) automates the migration of physical, virtual and cloud servers to AWS with minimal downtime. It runs continuous block-level replication of each source server and converts the servers to launch on AWS, typically with cutover windows of minutes. That is a *rehost*, or lift-and-shift, migration: the applications move unchanged. Servers can be grouped into applications and waves to move large numbers of them at once.
Option A, AWS DMS, migrates *databases* and other data stores, not whole servers with their operating systems and applications. Option C, AWS Elastic Beanstalk, is a place to deploy application code. Moving onto it means *replatforming* each application, which the company has no time for. Option D, Migration Evaluator, builds the business case and cost projection *before* a migration. It does not replicate or move any servers.
