Google Cloud Digital Leader exam: what's on it, who it's for

Updated 5 November 2026 · 9 min read

Google Cloud Digital Leader is Google's foundational certification for people who need to connect cloud decisions with organisational goals, rather than build or operate Google Cloud workloads. Take it if you work with technical teams, customers or business strategy; skip ahead to Associate Cloud Engineer if your goal is hands-on deployment and operations.

Google released a new version of the Cloud Digital Leader exam in August 2026. This guide explains who it suits, what the six sections cover, the price and renewal choices, how it compares with Generative AI Leader and ACE, and how to prepare with free material.

At a glance

Cloud Digital Leader is the vendor's name for a certification about cloud basics and applying Google Cloud to an organisation's goals. It has no prerequisites, although Google recommends experience collaborating with technical professionals. That makes it a sensible first Google Cloud credential for a manager, sales person or early-career learner who needs useful vocabulary and judgment without being expected to configure services.

  • Exam: Google Cloud Certified – Cloud Digital Leader, or CDL.
  • Format: 50–60 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, as of November 2026.
  • Price: US$99 plus tax, as of November 2026.
  • Delivery: online with a remote proctor or at a testing centre.
  • Validity: three years.

The official certification page is the place to check registration and delivery details. If you are still choosing a first cloud credential rather than choosing between Google exams, the beginner's guide to choosing a cloud certification puts the broader decision in context.

What changed in August 2026

Google put a new version of the exam live in August 2026. That is the version to study for now, so be cautious with older materials that describe the credential through only three areas, as Google's original 2021 version did. The current exam guide organises the content into six sections.

The update matters because the exam is intended to test how you connect business outcomes with digital, data, AI, modernisation, security and operational choices. Do not treat old question counts, time limits or section structures as a shortcut to the current format. Google does not publish a numerical passing score; it reports the result as pass or fail.

Who it's for, and who should skip it

Choose CDL when you participate in cloud decisions but do not need to implement those decisions yourself. It fits people translating between a business goal and a technical team: you need to understand why data, AI, security, modernisation and operations matter, then discuss the trade- offs clearly. The certification is also open to someone new to Google Cloud because there are no formal prerequisites.

It is not a substitute for hands-on administration. If you want to deploy resources, run workloads, manage access or solve operational problems, ACE is the more useful next target; is Google Associate Cloud Engineer worth it? explains that route in more depth. If your role is specifically about identifying and guiding generative AI opportunities rather than general cloud transformation, Generative AI Leader is the closer foundational exam.

There is also a practical reason not to collect the credential just because it is introductory. CDL can help you form a shared language with cloud specialists, but it cannot demonstrate that you have performed the work ACE covers. Pick the exam that matches the decisions you expect to make in your current or next role, not the one that merely has the shortest path.

The six exam sections

The six sections make the scope wider than a product-recognition test. Digital transformation, data transformation, AI, modernisation and security each account for about 18% of the exam, and operations accounts for about 10%, as of November 2026. Use those weights to keep operations in your study plan without letting it displace the larger themes.

Digital transformation

This section is about relating a cloud change to an organisational outcome. Study how to explain the purpose of a proposed change before becoming absorbed by service names: the useful answer connects a business problem, the people involved and the result the organisation wants. That business-first lens is especially important when several cloud options sound plausible.

Exploring data transformation

Data transformation asks you to reason about the role of data in a cloud decision. Focus on explaining why an organisation would make data more available, govern it carefully and use it to inform a goal, rather than trying to memorise a catalogue of products. This is a business-level section, so make each technical term earn its place in the outcome you are describing.

Innovating with AI

The AI section requires clear distinctions among AI, machine learning and generative AI. A practice question on the AI, machine learning and generative AI hierarchy is a useful adjacent check of that vocabulary. For a focused map of the Google Cloud offerings that appear in the GenAI Leader path, see Google Cloud's generative AI offerings, mapped.

You should also be able to assess an AI proposal in terms a non-specialist can act on. A practice question on measuring generative AI value helps practise comparing a pilot with its baseline, while a practice question on selecting a high-value, low-risk pilot keeps the decision tied to value, feasibility and risk. Those are Generative AI Leader questions, not CDL questions, but the decision-making habit transfers.

Modernizing infrastructure and applications

Modernisation is where you connect an existing way of working with a more suitable cloud-based approach. Think through the intended business result, the change involved and the constraints, instead of assuming that moving something to the cloud is automatically the goal. A practice question on total cost of ownership offers a nearby example of looking beyond an initial price when evaluating a solution.

Trust and security

Security is part of the decision from the start, not a final box to tick. In this section, be ready to explain why trust, security and governance affect whether an organisation can use cloud services responsibly. A practice question on an organisation policy for resource locations is a practical neighbouring example of turning a data-location requirement into a policy choice.

Scaling with operations

Operations is the smallest section, but it connects the other choices to ongoing oversight. Study how an organisation can observe, manage and improve cloud use after an initiative begins, including the financial side of running it. A practice question on billing budgets and alerts is a useful ACE-level example of making cloud spending visible before it becomes a surprise.

Google Cloud Digital Leader exam: format, price and renewal

The standard CDL exam has 50–60 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, as of November 2026. It costs US$99 plus tax, as of November 2026, and is available with an online remote proctor or at a testing centre.

The certification is valid for three years. You can renew by taking the standard exam, taking a 45-minute renewal exam, or completing designated Google Skills courses or skill badges. The renewal exam costs US$60 plus tax, as of November 2026; check the official page for its languages before planning around it.

Google's training platform is now called Google Skills. The exam page provides a free exam guide, English-only sample questions, a Google Skills learning path, a study guide and a YouTube playlist; free training does not make the proctored exam free by default. For the difference between genuinely free certifications, free training and voucher routes, see free cloud certifications.

Digital Leader vs Generative AI Leader vs ACE

All three are Google Cloud certifications, but they point to different kinds of work. The formats and prices below are as of November 2026, so use them to select a path rather than to infer that one credential is a prerequisite for another.

  • Who it's for: CDL: people demonstrating cloud basics and using Google Cloud to meet organisational goals. / GenAI Leader: people in any role who need business-level generative AI knowledge and strategic leadership, not implementation. / ACE: people seeking an associate- level, hands-on Google Cloud certification.
  • Questions and minutes: CDL: 50–60 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, as of November 2026. / GenAI Leader: 50–60 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, as of November 2026. / ACE: 50–60 questions in 120 minutes, as of November 2026.
  • Price: CDL: US$99 plus tax, as of November 2026. / GenAI Leader: US$99 plus tax, as of November 2026. / ACE: US$125, as of November 2026.
  • Validity: CDL: three years. / GenAI Leader: three years. / ACE: three years.
  • What it asks: CDL: how cloud transformation, data, AI, modernisation, security and operations support an organisation. / GenAI Leader: generative AI fundamentals, Google Cloud's generative AI offerings, improving model output and business strategy. / ACE: setting up a cloud environment, planning and implementing it, operating it, and configuring access and security.

Choose CDL first when your question is "how does cloud support the organisation?" Choose GenAI Leader when the question narrows to using generative AI strategically, and ACE when you need to perform the technical work. The Generative AI Leader vs AWS AI Practitioner guide is useful if you are comparing the GenAI option with a different cloud provider.

How to prepare for the Cloud Digital Leader exam

Start with the free official material: read the exam guide and study guide, then use the sample questions and Google Skills path to check whether you can explain the six themes in plain language. Build notes around decisions and outcomes, not a long list of product names. When you cannot explain why a choice helps an organisation, return to the relevant section rather than trying to memorise an answer.

For a two- or three-week plan, use the first week to cover digital transformation, data and AI; use the second for modernisation, trust and security, and operations; then reserve the final week, if you have it, to revisit weak explanations and practise selection decisions. This is an introductory exam, but the time limit means you still need to recognise the purpose of each section without stopping to reconstruct the basics.

This site has no Cloud Digital Leader question bank. Use the Generative AI Leader cert page and Generative AI Leader practice questions, plus the Associate Cloud Engineer cert page and Associate Cloud Engineer practice questions, to practise the nearby business-AI and hands-on topics after you have learned the CDL objectives. Treat those questions as reinforcement, not as a prediction of CDL wording or a replacement for Google's official materials.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Cloud Digital Leader certification worth taking?

It is worth taking when your role needs you to discuss Google Cloud choices with technical teams and relate them to organisational goals. It is less useful as proof that you can configure or operate workloads, because that is not what the six sections are built to assess. If hands-on work is your target, ACE is the better signal.

What are the best resources for the Cloud Digital Leader exam?

Start with Google's free exam guide, study guide, English-only sample questions, Google Skills path and YouTube playlist. They line up with the current six-section exam version, which went live in August 2026. Use external practice material carefully when it still presents the older three-area scope.

Where can I practise related Google Cloud topics?

Use the live Generative AI Leader and ACE banks linked above for adjacent business-AI and operational concepts. They reinforce useful decisions and vocabulary, but they do not reproduce the CDL exam or replace the official material for its current six-section scope.

What is the Google Cloud Digital Leader passing score?

Google does not publish a numerical passing score for CDL. Your result is reported as pass or fail, so a quoted percentage from a practice-test site is not an official target. Prepare against the current six sections instead.

How much does the Google Cloud Digital Leader exam cost?

The standard exam costs US$99 plus tax, as of November 2026. Google offers free preparation material, but the proctored certification exam is paid by default; voucher routes can be available through eligible programmes. The renewal exam costs US$60 plus tax, as of November 2026, if that renewal route suits you.
